Suburbia

Welcome to Suburbia

An art exhibition/installation I curated as a college junior showcasing glow-in-the-dark paintings that represent my conformist childhood upbringing in suburban New Jersey. The concept of suburbia is fascinating to me, originating in the early 1950s with the creation of post World War II Levitttowns, greatly expanding as an American lifestyle from there. Highlighted by refrigerators, tupperware, new technological appliances, large lush green backyards and home-cooked meals. This symbolizes both the lucrative and haunting notion of the "American Dream". Suburbia serves as a microcosm to the constant ever-changing political, social, and cultural landscape America faces today. We have yet to explore the nature of this lifestyle and what makes it uniquely desirable beyond its traditionalist image of family-living and conformity in these modern times.
